Why we give

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7

In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were required to offer ten percent of their increase to the Lord. (The word ‘tithe’ means ‘tenth.’) And while we are not under the Law of Moses and, therefore, not obligated to tithe, God still pours out his blessing (à la Malachi 3:10) upon those who give faithfully to Him. The Law of Moses was fulfilled, not abolished, by Christ. The generosity prescribed by the Law is inscribed on our hearts by the Spirit of God who lives within us.

Thus, what we find in the New Testament is a generosity which far exceeds that mandated by the Law of Moses — Christians selling everything they have and giving it to the Church; Gentile congregations giving massive amounts of support the beleaguered Church in Jerusalem. So though, under the Law of Christ, a particular amount to give is not prescribed, our Lord does call us to give and to do so cheerfully:

God provides for the ministry of All Souls through your generosity. We honor your gifts, given to Him, with faithful stewardship, ethical business practices, and full accountability so that the financial integrity of All Souls remains beyond reproach.
